By 2030, the defence budget is set to reach an unprecedented 183 billion euros per year. Even today, the global arms trade is a multi-billion dollar business, characterised by economic and political interests, as well as a profound lack of transparency.

While European states are justifying increased defence spending on the grounds of national security in the face of the war in Ukraine and the erosion of Western hegemony, weapons and military technologies are finding their way into regions where serious human rights violations are the everyday reality.

Gaza is one of the most obvious examples. Israel’s conduct of the war has led to an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, with the UN even speaking of genocide. Yet those whose arms supplies enable this are only marginally addressed in political and public discourse.

What role do corruption, lobbying and political influence play in the global arms trade? Why are states, politicians and companies whose arms deals facilitate crimes so often not held accountable? What legal, journalistic and civil society levers are available to break this cycle of impunity?

The panel will examine the structures and mechanisms of the global arms trade, questioning the responsibility of those who enable and profit from it.

Germany is increasing its military spending.
