Dr. Alexander Schwarz is a German human rights lawyer and co-director of the International Crimes and Accountability Program at the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR). Trained in law in Heidelberg and Santiago de Chile, he has held academic and research positions at the Max Planck Institute for International Law in Heidelberg and at Leipzig University’s Institute for International Law. His doctoral work at Göttingen University focused on sexualized and gender-based violence before the International Criminal Court, a field in which he has also supported universal jurisdiction cases before German courts. Before joining ECCHR, he worked as Senior Legal Advisor for the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) in Tunis. Since October 2023, he has been contributing to the ECCHR’s work on human rights crimes in Palestine, Libya, Syria and Iran
