Helga Baumgarten taught political science at Birzeit University from 1993 to 2020, where she headed the master’s program “Democracy and Human Rights” and continues to supervise doctoral students. She has published internationally on the Middle East conflict, Palestinian nationalism, and political Islam. Her books include her classic work on the Palestinian national movement, Palestine: Liberation into Statehood, Suhrkamp 1991, and her study of political Islam in Palestine, Hamas, Diederichs 2006. Her most recent publication is No Peace for Palestine (The Long War Against Gaza: Occupation and Resistance). Promedia Verlag Vienna, September 2021). She has lived in Berlin since 1985
